The inclined-bed CNC lathe is developed based on the principles of CNC machining. It is highly targeted and shows significant improvements over flat-bed CNC lathes in terms of machine planning, rigidity, precision, and chip disposal capabilities. Its main advantages are:
High machining precision:
The transmission lead screw of a CNC machine is a high-precision ball screw, with minimal clearance between the screw and nut. However, some clearance always exists. When the lead screw moves in one direction and then reverses, reverse backlash inevitably occurs, affecting the CNC machine's repeat positioning accuracy and thus machining precision. The design of the inclined-bed CNC lathe directly affects the clearance of the X-direction ball screw. Gravity acts directly on the screw's axis, making the reverse backlash during transmission virtually zero. In flat-bed CNC lathes, the X-direction screw is not affected by axial gravity, and the clearance cannot be directly eliminated. This is the inherent precision advantage that the design gives to inclined-bed CNC lathes.
Good machine rigidity:
The cross-sectional area of an inclined-bed CNC lathe is larger than that of a flat-bed lathe of the same specifications, resulting in stronger bending and torsional resistance. In an inclined-bed CNC lathe, the tool cuts downwards from above the workpiece at an angle. The cutting force is basically consistent with the direction of the workpiece's gravity, so the spindle rotation is absolutely stable and less prone to cutting vibrations. In a flat-bed CNC lathe, the cutting force generated between the tool and the workpiece is at a 90° angle to the workpiece's gravity, making it more susceptible to vibrations.
Facilitates chip disposal:
Due to gravity, inclined-bed CNC lathes are less prone to tool winding and facilitate chip disposal. Combined with the centrally located lead screw and guide rail protective sheet metal, it prevents chips from accumulating on the lead screw and guide rails.
High level of automation:
The increased number of tool positions and the configuration of automatic chip removal machines lay the foundation for automated production. One person attending multiple machines is a constant direction of machine development. By adding a milling power head, automatic feeding machine, or robotic arm to the inclined-bed CNC lathe, automatic loading, completion of all cutting processes in a single clamping, automatic unloading, and automatic chip removal can be achieved, resulting in a highly efficient automated CNC machine. Although flat-bed CNC lathes can also add power milling heads and automatic loading, their structure is at a disadvantage in terms of automated production.
